css3 - select box creating unknown spacing with custom fonts -

i'm using custom font-face loading fine within ie8. however, select boxes produces random (unecessary spacing) @ top of selected child element.

i've been doing research portion of day, however, i'm unable find cause , fix why ie producing excess spacing causing option clipped.

any ideas?
